Chapter 9

Author's pov

Riya woke up early on her first day at Rathore Industries, her heart pounding with a mix of excitement and nervousness. She dressed meticulously, smoothing her modest outfit in front of the mirror, determined to make a good impression. But as she descended the stairs, her stepmother's sharp voice greeted her. "And where do you think you’re going this early?" the older woman sneered, her tone dripping with sarcasm. Riya, trying to remain calm, replied evenly, "I’m going to work." Her stepmother's lips curled into a mocking smile as she added, "Work, is it? Don’t forget, as soon as you get your salary, it’s ours. Don’t think for a second you’ll keep it." Riya’s stepfather, sitting nearby, glanced up from his newspaper and said coldly, "Be back before 8 PM. No excuses." Suppressing the sting of their words, Riya nodded silently, her face composed despite the ache in her heart.

Stepping outside, Riya drew in a deep breath, letting the cool morning air calm her nerves. She told herself she wouldn’t let their words ruin this day—it was the start of something new, something hers. The bus ride to Rathore Industries was filled with a flurry of thoughts: anticipation of meeting her new boss, the desire to prove herself, and a tinge of worry about the challenges ahead. By the time she arrived at the grand building, the sight of its sleek, modern facade filled her with awe and a renewed sense of purpose. She straightened her back, fixed a determined smile on her face, and stepped inside.

The reception area was bustling with activity, its polished floors gleaming under the morning sun. Riya approached the desk, where an elderly receptionist with kind eyes and silver-streaked hair greeted her warmly. "First day, dear?" the woman asked, her voice gentle and reassuring. Riya nodded, her nerves momentarily fading in the warmth of the old woman’s smile. "You’ll do great," the receptionist added as she handed Riya her ID badge. Grateful for the unexpected kindness, Riya thanked her and smiled back, feeling a flicker of hope reignite within her. The positive energy of the moment lifted her mood, making her forget the harsh start to her morning.

Badge in hand, Riya found a seat in the waiting area, her excitement returning as she took in her surroundings. The office was modern and bustling with professionals moving briskly, their confidence contagious. She sat with her hands folded, her heart racing as she anticipated meeting her boss. Though the morning had started sour, the kindness of the receptionist and the promising atmosphere of Rathore Industries filled her with determination. She vowed silently to prove herself, to rise above her circumstances, and to embrace this opportunity wholeheartedly. The weight of her step-parents' words lingered in the back of her mind, but she pushed it aside, focusing instead on the possibilities ahead.
